Today i cam across a issue where in the user had some Excel files embedded in a word Document .
Sharepoint 2007 .
Office 2007
We tried doing a Repair of office . We also tried checking the proxy it did not help . added the Sharepoint site to the trusted sites still the issue exists . so we did some more Research and found a option that worked for us . If we download the Word file and then try to open the excel doc we are able to .
Right-clicking on the Excel objects.
2. Click Worksheet Object -> Convert.
3. Choose Microsoft Office Excel Binary Worksheet
4. Click OK
After it converts it to a Binary worksheet, you can then repeat the process
and choose Microsoft Office Excel Worksheet

Didn't work for me. Office 2010 and Sharepoint 2010. I have to check out, open local cache version, edit the excel (embedded in PPTX), then check back in. What a pain.
