Unable to process the request. Wait a few minutes and try performing this operation again.

Issue: Most of our clients were having issue while opening the Excel files from their SharePoint sites using Excel web access web part after an upgrade from MOSS 2007 to SharePoint 2010.

Error: Unable to process the request. Wait a few minutes and try performing this operation again

Troubleshooting done:

- Adding the URL in trusted file location.

- Change the settings to open the document with client application form document library. .

Resolution:

After some investigation we found this Blog from the technet , which talks about the same problem:

- Rebooting the server will remedy this, but that is not realistic.

- You can run IISReset /noforce that too should remedy the issue.

- To avoid a complete IISReset, you can manually recycle the Application Pool Running Excel Services. (Please check the blog for additional info)

My Links missing in SharePoint 2010 after Migration

We have just Migrated to 2010 and get a lot of tickets on this issue .

In MOSS 2007,  we are used to seeing a link in a drop-down box at the top right of our SharePoint sites, called My Links. At first glance, it seems that this functionality has been removed from SharePoint 2010. It’s still there but with a different name (Quick Links) .

How to retrieve the Lost my links from the 2007 site after migration to 2010 ?

Modifying a SharePoint Database is NOT SUPPORTED. Some would even argue running this select query against a database is not supported. Sometimes people want info out of the DB not excuses.

Disclaimer : Take all the required backups before you make any changes
  1. So the first thing you need to do is figure out what profile database you need information out of. To do that you go to Central Admin.
  2. Now Click Shared Services Administration from the quick launch.
  3. From this screen hover over the appropriate SSP name, click the drop down arrow, and choose Edit Properties.

  4. Now find where it says SSP Database. This your Database Name.
  5. Now you need to open a SQL Query Window using the SQL Management tools
  6. Then run the query below – Remember to replace the Use statement with your database name from step 4
Use SharedServices1_DB
Select
UP.NTName,
UP.PreferredName,
UP.Email,
UL.Title,
UL.URL
From
UserLinks UL inner join UserProfile_Full UP on UL.recordId = UP.recordID

How do you get My Links back?

Libraries

In a library, go to the Library tab in the ribbon.
Click the Connect to Office button.  This is the interface to add or remove a link to the library to the list of “My Links”, as well as to manage this list of links.

When you click Add to SharePoint Sites, this library is not only added to your own personal list of links, but it is added to all of your Office suite of applications, on the “Open” and “Save As” screens.

When you click Manage SharePoint Sites, the following screen is displayed, with a list of your whole list of links:

Where is my links on my Mysite ?

Go to your My Site and click on My Content at the top.  Click Site Actions, Edit Page, and click to Add a Web Part.  In the Recommended Items category of web parts, click to add the My Links web part to the page.  There it is!  Right click on the My Links web part title, and copy that URL to the clipboard.

If you want the My Links link to be more obvious and accessible, though?  Yes, there’s a way to do that also, although it still won’t be the same as it is in SharePoint 2007.  It entails adding My Links to the Personalization Site Links in the User Profile Service Application.

  1. In Central Administration, click Manage Service Applications.
  2. Click the User Profile Service Application.
  3. Click Configure Personalization Site.
  4. Click New Link.

  1. Your URL will look something like that.  In this scenario, I have a web app just for the my sites.  Fill in an owner because that field is required.  Leaving the Audience field blank means that this link will be shown to everyone.
Now, when users are on their My Site, My Profile, My Content, they will see this:

Workflows are not available after we upgrade from 2007 to 2010 using database attach method

This is a very critical issue that most of the users have faced after the migration from Sharepoint 2007 to 2010

After upgrading the SharePoint 2007 Database via database attach method to SharePoint 2010, You might find that the 2007 Approval workflows are no longer available for users to create new workflows.
In SharePoint 2010 the 2007 workflows are there to allow any running workflows to complete, but by default creating new instances of the workflows is disabled as the expectations are that you will want to move forward to the SharePoint 2010 workflows.

Resolution

1 .  The following steps must be taken to enable 2007 workflows after upgrading to SharePoint 2010:
 =>  Go to Site Actions ->Site Settings->Site Collection Administration->Site collection features
  Activate SharePoint 2007 Workflows
=>  Remove ‘none’ from <AssociationCategories>none</AssociationCategories>
 =>  14\template\features\ReviewWorkflows\Reviewapproval.xml
 => 14\template\features\ReviewWorkflows\ReviewFeedback.xml
 =>  14\template\features\SignatureWorkflow\Signatures.xml
 =>  Associate Workflow
  Go to Shared Documents, Library Settings, Add a Workflow
 =>  Select legacy Workflow.

Note : Please take a back up of Reviewapproval.xml,ReviewFeedback.xml,Signatures.xml before doing the modification, the above solution is not verfied after we install any new update. chances are there that these files might get replaced in future update. please have a backup of working files as well.

What is an Upgrade ? Difference between an Upgrade and Migration

Upgrade is a process in which the existing product is added with Patches or service packs . This changes the Version of the Product . Typically upgrades are done to remove bugs from the Product to add features to the existing product so that users feel comfortable to have that product and utilise it to the fullest .

The Upgrade or patch will first check if you have the product installed on the machine and only then proceed with the installation .

for example Upgrade would be from Moss 2007 Sp1 to Sp2

Now Lets Understand Migration .

Migration is the process of replicating applications from one product in another product

Like Sharepoint 2007 to Sharepoint 2010 .

it can also be Moss sites Migrating to the Websphere environment or visa versa .

For an Migration you need not have the base product installed on the machine . it would be a fresh product installation on which migration has to be done .

Note - I have tried my best to explain the above topic . just incase if you feel something is missing or any corrections has to be done . Feel free to get in touch with me it would be much appreciated .
