SharePoint lists : Handy tips and tricks

You know how to create lists. But perhaps you need some shortcuts to help you work faster, and more effectively. This short course will do just that: give you tips and tricks for SharePoint 2010 lists.

IE crashes when opening Datasheet view on sharepoint

There is no one Solution to this issue . I have found that it may happen due to various reasons .

"The list is displayed in Standard view. It cannot be displayed in Datasheet view for one or more of the following reasons: A datasheet component compatible with Windows SharePoint Services is not installed, your browser does not support ActiveX controls, or support for ActiveX controls is disabled"

Resolution :

* Try clearing the IE cache .it may workout to be the best and quick solution

* Try Doing a Repair of Office . or reinstall

* Windows SharePoint Service Support options for Microsoft Office should be installed (applicable for Office 2003 as well as for Office 2007)

How to enable this option:

-Start-Control Panel-Add or Remove Programs-click on Microsoft Office and then Change
-Add/Remove Features
-Expand the Office Tools category.
-Next verify that you have both the Microsoft Office Access Web Datasheet Component and the Windows SharePoint Services Support component installed.
-If these components are not installed choose to run them from your computer and then click the Continue button and go through the installation process. You may need your Office 2007 install media.

* Check if ActiveX controls are active in Internet Explorer.
To do this open IE and go to the Tools menu > Internet options

* Select "Enable" for Script ActiveX controls marked safe for scripting.

* Adjust these settings accordingly and then click OK twice to return to Internet Explorer.

If you are running Internet Explorer 9 (32 and 64-bit are installed at the same time) use the 32-bit version. SharePoint doesn’t like using datasheet view if you are running IE9 on a machine with Office 64 installed so I will recommend installing Microsoft Office Access Database Engine 2007 (haven’t tried 2010) found here:

Redirection of a site to another site using Content editor Webpart

Our Client migrated all its sites from MOSS 2007 to SharePoint 2010, and there was a need to redirect users from one site to another in some sites.

· Edit the page where you would like to include the redirect script
· Add a Content Editor Web Part on the page
· Edit the Content Editor Web Part properties , rename the web part to something more meaningful such as, Redirect.
· Select the Content Editor Web Part Click here to add new content link
· Locate the HTML icon within the Markup section of the ribbon, select it, and then select Edit HTML Source.
· Type in (or copy and paste) the code below in the HTML Source web page dialog that displays

· Select Ok and save the page.
· The script above is set up to redirect after 10 seconds. You can increase or decrease the time frame.
· Remember to also replace the URL above with the appropriate destination URL that applies to your particular situation.

Note: If you are building a web part and is crashing the webpage, here is a quick way to remove it and get the rest of the page working. Add contents=1 to for example, if the page url is http://siteurl/default.aspx then change it to http://siteurl/default.aspx?contents=1 and it will bring up the web part page maintenance page and lists all the web parts that are used in that page and provides way to delete selected web parts , switch view or reset.

How to start Learning Sharepoint Administrator ( In Brief )

Hi guys,
I get many mails /calls from all over the world to understand how to start understanding / Learning SharePoint from the admin Point. I see that more of the developers are also interested. I feel if you have knowledge about development getting into SharePoint administration can be nothing like it the best. Maybe you don’t need to start fresh
For a Fresher, nowadays there are trainings conducted in some institutes. However it is difficult to find a good institute which can provide all the details about SharePoint. Cannot say awareness is less but yes compared to other products it is less.

First understand What is SharePoint and its applications?
Microsoft SharePoint is a Web application platform developed by Microsoft. First launched in 2001, SharePoint has historically been associated with intranet content management and document management, but recent versions have significantly broader capabilities. SharePoint evolved from projects codenamed "Office Server” and “Tahoe” during the Office XP development cycle.
“Office Server” evolved out of the FrontPage and Office Server Extensions and “Team Pages”. It targeted simple, bottom-up collaboration.
“Tahoe”, built on shared technology with Exchange and the “Digital Dashboard”, targeted top-down portals, search and document management.

The versions are (in chronological order):
  • Microsoft SharePoint Portal Server 2001
  • Microsoft SharePoint Team Services (2002)
  • Windows SharePoint Services 2.0 (free license) - Microsoft SharePoint Portal Server 2003 (commercial release)
  • Windows SharePoint Services 3.0 (free license) - plus Microsoft Office SharePoint Server 2007 (commercial extension)
  • Microsoft SharePoint Foundation 2010 (free) - plus Microsoft SharePoint Server 2010 (commercial extension for Foundation), and SharePoint Enterprise 2010 (commercial extension for Server)
  • Microsoft SharePoint Foundation 2013 - plus Microsoft SharePoint Server 2013 (extension on top of Foundation) SharePoint 2013 has been available to Microsoft volume licensees and TechNet and MSDN subscribers since late 2012
First get some knowledge about the IIS 6.0 ,7.0 Active directory , Server 2003 2008 later , Sql 2005 , 2008 later
You don’t even need a server machine / software or a windows 7 machine and install SharePoint on it at the beginning. Don’t even need to go for a training session. Only after you are done with this you can then have some virtual machines and then install server software’s and SharePoint on it with sql .

First use the labs available on : http://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/cc707678.aspx

SharePoint Server 2010 Virtual Labs
This will help a lot with Little Expenses. your basics will get clear. This is just 30 - 40 % of the knowledge I would say.
Installation, configuration, Migration consists of the other part .

You can use Hyper v machines to install server server 2008 on VM`s and then install the Microsoft Sharepoint Foundation version which is license free software on your machine to learn SharePoint Installation, configuration , Migration (surely for migration you need to have 2007 ).

There are some good ebooks available on the net which you can use to learn more . However the best links or sites are Technet Library and MSDN Articles.
